Pedaling the streets

Warm weather is here! I've been on the streets all winter and spring, but now the fruits of planning are beginning to come. Throughout the winter and spring, I have been involved with or connecting to local and regional groups and resources for either public policy or programming. Here are a few of the things that are coming up from those connections and efforts:

Bicycle Blessing- June 3, 3pm, A collaboration between the City of Elgin Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and Coalition of Elgin Religious Leaders. This will be an interfaith service followed by fun ride for ice cream.

Kidical Mass- On June 17, July 17, and August 12, Elgin streets will be stormed by the likes of children and families in this gentler version of Critical Mass. By stormed, I mean a modest pace and distance ride.

Basics of Family Biking- June 21, I'll be sharing from my experiences of biking as a family at the Rakow Branch of the Gail Borden Public Library District. I'll talk about some of the basics and have some conversation about where and how others ride in Elgin and beyond.

Dennis Jurs Memorial Race- On July 18, Elgin will host a day of the Intelligentsia Cup, a series of bike races across the Chicagoland. This race is in memory of Dennis Jurs, an Elgin community member and cyclist who was killed on a training ride in 2015. Along with a day of racing by top level cyclists, there will be festivities and educational programming throughout the day.

I'm finding that Facebook is a turning out to be my best event management and marketing tool for the time being. So if you are interested in programs or rides that Elgin Bike Hub is involved in, check out the Elgin Bike Hub Facebook page for more information and updates.

These events are only a sample of what is happening in and around Elgin that involves bicycles, so be watch for updates. If you know of something that is coming up, let us know. If you would like to get involved, be in touch.

Happy pedaling!
